6th grade advanced band students will perform at the District Festival on Wednesday, February 10, 2016. Also, there will be a concert on Tuesday, February 23, 2016. It will include all of the band students. The location is at here, GMS, from 6pm-7pm. By Justin V., Morgan L., Molly M. Recently, the 6th graders in Mrs. Gregory’s class did an art project for the Empty Bowls Foundation, an organization that helps fight hunger. They were asked to make bowls for kids who don’t have a lot of food. Inside each bowl there is a special stamp chosen by the students. Mrs. Gregory wanted to teach students that art can be used for social causes like ending hunger. During, parent teacher conferences, Mrs. Gregory will be selling the bowls for a dollar in the teacher’s lounge. The Tempe Empty Bowls Festival will sell them for ten dollars. All of the money will go to the Empty Bowls Foundation. The 6th grade students were thrilled with how the bowls turned out. Remember the bowls will be sold in the teacher’s lounge during parent teacher conferences! By Yasmin C., Anna Q., Cindy B.
6th grade students now get to take their Chromebooks home. In order to take the computers home, they have to sign a permission slip as well as their parents. The students are given a packet with all the information for replacement and additional helpful information. The students also receive a case and a charger in order to charge their Chromebooks at home. Students are not allowed to play games on their Chromebooks or look at inappropriate websites. If students are caught on inappropriate websites, there will be consequences involving the district, the school, and the student’s parent or guardian. There will also be consequences for forgetting the Chromebook at home. The first time is call home. The second and third time is call home plus lunch detention. The fourth time is the Chromebook must be left at school for a specific period of time. There may be more consequences to come, so make sure to stay updated on all Chromebook information. GMS has a Garden Club that is taken care of by Mr. Nasser and NJHS. Garden Club meets before and after school. Students come to help Mr. Nasser plant, water, ready areas, and so on. If you want to come help us, ask Mr. Nasser for the days the club meets. So far the Garden Club has made two rock gardens, created a successful a irrigation system, and planted many different types of fruits and vegetables. Some fruits we have harvested are watermelon, pomegranates, and some citrus plants. Over the summer, the garden flourished with fruits and vegetables. Even though our garden was vandalized, we made the best out of a bad situation. Stop by Garden Club soon! Article by Chara M. Photos by Caleb M., Jorge E., Chara M., Natalie F., Julianna M. On Wednesday, November 18th, Rich Ihles from Reptile Adventures came to visit GMS. There were two different kinds of presentations. One presentation was for all sixth graders, and the other was a smaller group chosen to go by their science teachers for showing a personal interest in science. In the larger group, they were allowed to touch Teresa the snake on their way out. In the smaller group, students lined up and got a closer look at each reptile and got to hold the snakes. The students had a lot of questions and Mr. Ihles was able to answer all of them. Overall, students seemed to like the experience. Look at the slideshow for pictures of the presentations! On Friday, October 30th, Ms. Wheaton's Honors class did a polymer (plastic) experiment creating slime out of Borax, boiling water, food coloring, and glue. This taught students how to state and record what they observed. The students really enjoyed making the slime. According to a student, using Borax was the most difficult part about the experiment. The best part was the outcome and how the slime felt. In conclusion, the experiment was a success and was not only beneficial for the students but fun. |
