For the past 25 years at GMS, there has been a program helping kids make decisions to solve problems in the real world. It is called Peer Mediation. Peer Mediation is a series of questions asked by two of the GMS ambassadors with two students that have a conflict. According to Mr. Crane, a counselor at Gililland Middle School, “Peer Mediation is a special thing.”
The meetings between the Gilliland Ambassadors and the students are held in a counselor’s office or during a teacher’s prep period. Each Peer Mediation can have two people meditating with each other at once. If there are more than two people involved in the problem then there can be multiple mediations. The mediators will never choose sides in a problem and won’t share any information with people outside the mediation. Peer Mediation is confidential except if it is illegal or life threatening.
Students can get Peer Mediation by doing three different things: fill out a paper in the front office, ask a counselor or teacher, or if a teacher sees you have a problem they can suggest one for you. There can only be one person at a time for each counselor or teacher. If you are not comfortable with a mediator, then you can tell the counselor sitting in and they can bring in a mediator you’re more comfortable with. The counselor’s believe that children can solve their problems with some guidance.
